Choosing the right fertiliser for your soil

4 min read

Know what your soil needs before you buy fertiliser — and avoid wasting money.

Every soil is different. A soil test tells you what is missing so you only buy what helps.

NPK 15-15-15 is a good general starting fertiliser for many crops. Urea adds nitrogen and is best applied when plants are young and growing fast.

Apply fertiliser when the soil is moist, never on dry ground. Cover it lightly so rain does not wash it away.

Add organic matter — animal manure or compost — every season. It keeps soil soft and helps it hold water.
